Why Energy Retail is Architecturally Complex
Energy retail companies operate at the intersection of: commodity trading (ETRM), customer management (CRM), regulatory reporting (REMIT, EMIR, national requirements), billing and settlements (complex tariff structures, smart metering), and increasingly, digital customer channels.

Integration Layer: ESB or iPaaS platform, API gateway, event streaming. The integration layer is the nervous system of the energy retail architecture — enabling real-time data flows between domains while maintaining data consistency and audit traceability.
The Cloud Migration Sequence
Based on the ATHENA Framework, the recommended cloud migration sequence for energy retail follows risk-stratified waves: Wave 1: Non-critical systems (intranet, collaboration tools, development environments). Wave 2: Customer-facing systems (portal, mobile, CRM). Wave 3: Finance and reporting systems (ERP, BI, regulatory reporting). Wave 4: Core operational systems (billing, ETRM, meter data management).
This sequencing builds cloud operational capability before migrating mission-critical systems — reducing the risk of operational disruption during the transition.
Regulatory Architecture Considerations
Energy retail companies operate under overlapping regulatory frameworks with conflicting requirements: REMIT requires real-time transaction reporting. GDPR requires data minimization and right to erasure. National energy regulations specify data retention requirements. SOX (for multinational subsidiaries) requires financial control documentation.
